The Expiatory Chapel

The Expiatory Chapel was built in 1910, near Villa Reale, to the right of the great avenue that is the Villa complex's monumental entrance, on the spot where King Umberto I was assassinated on July 29, 1900, by the anarchist Gaetano Bresci. A thirty-five meters square- based tapering column rises from the underlying sacellum. On the north and south facing sides there are two alabaster Latin crosses, twelve meters -in height. On the tip of the stele, in bronze, the royal symbols and a crown, whilst a Pieta by the sculptor Ludovico Pogliaghi is set near the entrance to the sacellum.
